How To Hack(Tether) Palm Pre into a WiFi Router!
(Download This YouTube Video using FREE FLVDirect software)
This post is a bit outdated, please see this new post that teaches you how to install Verizon’s Mobile Hotspot on your Palm Pre for FREE.
For those of you who want to hack your Palm Pre into a wifi-router like a Novatel MiFi 2000 WiFi router, there’s a free app you can install called My Tether.
Currently, there’s 2 versions of My Tether, version 2.0 with $10 donation w/ easy installer and the version 1.5, which is free but requires you to do a little hacking.
Today, I will go through step-by-step on how to get the free version working on your Sprint Palm Pre. If you go through the steps carefully, you shouldn’t have trouble having a Palm Pre hotspot in just under an hour.
Step A
First, you will need to install Java 6 or above and Virtual Box. (This step isn’t required unless you are going to use the emulator, I found that SDK is just needed for the Palm’s USB driver and Novacom, that’s about it.)
Second, you will need to go register at Palm.com to get your Palm Pre SDK, which practically contains all the core files you need to emulate and hack your Palm Pre.
Once you’ve installed all the 3 things mentioned above, go to your Palm Pre then do the following:
Type “upupdowndownleftrightleftrightbastart” in the Launcher area where you can see all the apps.
Once you do that, you will see a Developer Mode Enabler menu pop up like this:

Simply click on it and enable it, the phone will ask you to reset the phone so say yes and reset your phone.
Once your phone has resetted, you will need to download novaterm1.zip and unzip it into your sdk/bin directory. For Windows XP, this is under C:\Program Files\Palm\SDK\bin. (You don’t need novaterm as the SDK comes shipped with novacom so skip this step.)
(For other operating systems, refer to webos-internals.org here)
Open up a command prompt (for Win XP) and go to your sdk/bin directory. For me, it was in C:\Program Files\Palm\SDK\bin. See the screenshot below for newbies.
Now, connect your phone to your computer via the USB cable.
Once connected, type this on your command prompt that’s still open:
novacom -t open tty://
You should get a terminal such as below with root@castle as the prompt:
Don’t worry, this is where the fun begins, just keep following my directions carefully.
Alright, congratulations! You should pat yourself in the back, you just learned how to “root” into the linux system of your Palm Pre phone! It took me me a long time to figure this out because the instructions were out there but no one documented each step in detail. (and thus point of this blog post to clarify those details for computer dummies like me…)
Here comes the fun part where you install the My Tether free version.
Simply type the following in the root@castle prompt:
wget -qO- http://mytether.net/install.php | /bin/sh
This linux command will automatically download My Tether version 1.5 and install it on your Palm Pre.
Once the install has finished, you should see root@castle prompt pop back up.
Step B
Now, go to your Palm Pre and browse your apps in the Launcher, you should see a new app called “My Tether” appear.
Enable tethering by turning the upper-right button to ON, then choose to use “DHCP” when the app asks you.
Finally, go to your computer and connect to “AoNet” on your computer’s wireless network.
You should be connected fairly soon to the internet now.
If you have trouble connecting, try resetting both your computer and the Palm Pre.
You should also be able to connect multiple devices since your Palm Pre is now also a WiFi Router with DHCP server.
Here’s all the resources I used to get my Palm Pre working as a WiFi router:
- Webos-Internals.Org – This site has abundance of information on how to access the linux system in your Palm Pre.
- My Tether – This is the GUI app for tethering your Palm Pre via WiFi OR USB.
- IsYouGeekedUp – I first found this guide on how to tether via bluetooth. Too bad my netbook doesn’t have bluetooth and I kept searching until I found a WiFi solution. You can refer to this guide if you really want bluetooth though.
I should have a review of the USB tethering and My Tether paid-version in soon so check back Palm Pre-ers!
The paid version My Tether supposedly has WEP encryption so I am really looking forward to that since I would like to use it in public places and not have to worry about evil-doers.

Hi Ryan,
If you get a wget error message, that means your Palm Pre is probably not connected to the internet.
Check your phone and make sure you can browse the web and try again.
Also, it’s a good idea to use “wget” command where you have a decent connection as that’s downloading the app itself. Let me know if you have more troubles.

Just wanted to thank you. I am a total “newb” at this stuff and had to go through it a couple of times but got it to work. Your tutorial is great. My “issue” was that I couldn’t find the “|” key since it wasn’t printed on my keyboard keys. So for anyone who is at retarded as me, hit the shift + backslash (“\”) button.
Thanks again – great job!

Was able to follow the steps up to the novacom -t open tty:// The errror message that I got was” unable to find device” Does the Virtual Box has to be running? I am also using Vista 64bit, and I follow the instructions for this OS. When I connect my phone, Vista wants to locate drivers for the phone, then fails in dev mode. Help..Thanks
August 4th, 2009 at 12:56 am
Hi Akijione,
You need to make sure that your novacom is installed and the phone is in developer’s mode. (AND, you need a decent EDVO connection) The virtual box doesn’t have to be running, that’s an emulated Palm Pre to be run on your computer for testing and whatnot.
If you have trouble, the fastest solution is to grab a Win XP computer and install the app. Once you install the app, you don’t really need to install it again anyways. Just my 2 cents if you keep having more problems.

August 4th, 2009 at 2:08 pm
“wget” is a command that retrieves a web page or file via HTTP protocol. In other words, if you get error, that means your Palm Pre is either not connected to the internet via EDVO. Make sure you can browse the web on your phone, if it does, it should work.

This is a great instruction set…only wish I found it before I banged my head for hours to get it to work. Finally did tho. I have a quick question…what are the benefits to the paid version? Is it worth it If i have the free version working. Does this only work if the screen doesnt go to sleep (something I have read). Also, last night when I was using it the pages were loading at blazing speeds. Today they are A LOT slower. Is there something i am doing wrong? Do i have to enable EV DO speeds somehow?
August 5th, 2009 at 1:56 pm
Hellaciously cool.
For a non-tech geek like me to get it on the first try… WOW!
August 5th, 2009 at 3:00 pm
“wget” command is actually just a command that downloads files via HTTP protocol. In this example, wget is used to download a script and run it with “bin/sh” but you couldn't “install' anything unless it was similiarly a script. But I use wget all the time to make backups from my linux web server, it's about 100 times faster than FTP.
August 5th, 2009 at 3:01 pm
AWESOME!!! Thanks for your comment, that made my day!
August 5th, 2009 at 3:01 pm
The paid version has WEP encryption and I think the LCD feature. I found that in my testing in the last couple days that the LCD feature actually boosts your speeds a lot because the LCD is turned off and graphics don't have to be consuming CPU power. Plus, it saves a ton of battery, very very useful.
August 5th, 2009 at 3:05 pm
Hi Reggie,
Your installed Palm directory might be in a directory, you might want to try browsing through in your “My Computer” and find it first.
Also at command line, you can type the first couple letters such as “Pro” and press the Tab button and it will finish the directory name for you. (to “Program Files” for example) This is on Windows though.
That way, you are not entering the wrong directory.

I'm getting the same message, “bad address 'mytether.net'”. One part that was unclear is what to choose when hooking up my pre to my computer. I'm guessing 'usb drive' – Can't tell if I still have EvDO or wireless at this point. From the root@castle:/# prompt I can't ping mytether.net or 67.214.140.197.

Is your web browser working on the Palm?
August 5th, 2009 at 6:59 pm
Yes it was working but not when I chose 'usb drive' when plugging in my pc. I was over analyzing the 'just charge' choice that is offered (that is the correct choice). The App has now successfully installed and I will try out the tether tomorrow when I have access to my laptop. Thanks for the great article!!
August 5th, 2009 at 7:01 pm
Oh yes, I forgot that part, you need to choose “just charge” when connecting your Palm Pre to the computer. Awesome!
August 6th, 2009 at 1:16 am
First before anything else the fact that you took the time to write a tutorial let alone answer newbish questions like mine is awesome… I am stuck on one part though, ive already installed all the apps and opened up the command prompt but whenever i reach the step where it says to type “novacom -t open tty://” it tells me that the system cannot execute the specified program
August 6th, 2009 at 1:25 am
I love helping people! haha, anyways, make sure when you connect your phone to your computer, you select “Just Charge” option, not the other “USB Mass storage”. Make sure your phone is in “Developer's Mode” also otherwise it won't let you connect to your phone.
August 6th, 2009 at 1:31 am
why does the wifi feature on mytether app just hang there? what am I doing wrong? I don't get it!!!
August 6th, 2009 at 1:35 am
Hi,
Great job but i'm having trouble at the part when you said to…
Now, connect your phone to your computer via the USB cable.
Once connected, type this on your command prompt that’s still open:
novacom -t open tty://
You should get a terminal such as below with root@castle as the prompt
It keeps saying unable to find device which my pre is connected to the computer, how do i fix this??
August 6th, 2009 at 2:17 am
freakin amazing! thanks for the help and making this simple!
August 6th, 2009 at 3:18 am
Hey all, if your trying to do this with a 64bit OS I would advise against it… It took me a while to figure out why my phone was'nt being detected… If you have one try using a mac, install and setup took about 15 minutes in total
August 6th, 2009 at 10:15 am
I can't install the usbnet-pre.inf file. I get a “Cannot Start this Hardware” box that continues to say “There was a problem installing this hardware: Linux USB Ethernet/RNDIS Gadget <next line> This device cannot start. (Code 10)”
Any advice would be very much appreciated.
Thank you
August 6th, 2009 at 3:15 pm
So i got done with Step A, and once it finished with Installation Finished!” I look on my pre and could not find the app, so i restarted the pre and did the same thing 3 more time's with it all ending in Installation Finished!” Where is the app, i followed the directions perfectly but i can't find any evidence on my pre, any help would be awesome.
Thanks
August 6th, 2009 at 4:51 pm
I already have WebOSQuickInstall which created Program Files/Palm, Inc/novacom/x86/novacomd.exe
Will that work?
August 6th, 2009 at 5:11 pm
Try disabling your WiFi before running my tether, I've seen sometimes that mytether won't work without WiFi not disabled.
August 6th, 2009 at 5:12 pm
Make sure when you connect your Palm Pre to the computer, you choose “Just Charge” option and make sure you are in the developer's mode.
August 6th, 2009 at 5:13 pm
Once the app is installed, you don't need to connect to it again so use Win XP or Mac to install, probably the easiest instead of trying with a 64bit OS.
August 6th, 2009 at 5:14 pm
This is for the USB Modem, try choosing the option “Have Disk” and locating the .inf file, the instructions clearly outlined in the USB Modem blog post.
August 6th, 2009 at 5:15 pm
I think so, that should work or if it doesn't, just download the novacom from the link provided.
August 6th, 2009 at 5:27 pm
Tried that. Get the install error I listed earlier.

This is a phone, not a home or business router. The only reason to use WEP on the phone is to discourage others from trying to connect to it.
1) You really don't need WPA2. You are not leaving the Pre in WiFi mode but for a short time.
2) To crack 128 bit WEP, someone needs to monitor quite a bit of data transfer first, this is unlikely on a temporary phone connection.
3) 99.9% of the public either don't know how to crack WEP or wouldn't do so even if they did because they know it is a type of “breaking and entering” (and even illegal in many areas).
4) WPA is tremendously more complicated to program, so it might take him some time to add that type of function.
August 8th, 2009 at 6:18 am
I installed it just fine with 64bit Linux (Mandriva 2009.1).
August 8th, 2009 at 6:19 am
I have noticed on mine that I can't WiFi tether unless I turn off the WiFi on the phone first. Otherwise, it shows with a WEP key (1.5) and appears and disappears at random.
August 8th, 2009 at 11:59 am
Yes, 64bit linux works well, I meant 64bit Windows that are having lots of problems. GO LINUX!
August 8th, 2009 at 11:59 am
I have to agree, by the time someone catches enough packets on the phone and cracks WEP, I'd probably be somewhere else anyways.

Hello. i am looking forward to connecting my pre, but in the command prompt after i get to the root@castle, i entered the information, but then i get a “bad address” ..any thoughts

omg. i got it to work! after several attempts and switching from a vista computer to an xp computer i was finally able to get it to work, and i am a newbie. i had to google “how to open a command prompt” and i was able to get this working. anyone should be able to get this working if they follow the instructions step by step. thank you sooo much for the detailed intructions.

Glad to hear you got your Palm Pre working as a WiFi router, doesn't it feel good once you done it?
August 9th, 2009 at 6:06 pm
Most likely your internet connection is not working or that you didn't connect as “Just Charge” when you connected your phone to the computer.
August 9th, 2009 at 11:41 pm
Well I installed it just fine the very first attempt. The problem I'm having is that sometimes my laptop just won't connect to the internet. Even with 4 bars of EVDO, I can't seem to get the internet. Great post, though! Very awesome. I even played CoD4 on my 360 for a while.
August 9th, 2009 at 11:43 pm
Great to hear, try the donation version, it allows you to turn your LCD off and get faster WiFI. Or if you don't want to pay, just tether using the USB, it's faster if you use the free version.

August 10th, 2009 at 9:14 pm
I'm having trouble getting it to work and have tried for several hours.I have followed all the instructions, loaded all the software, and tried resetting and reloading several times. Maybe with my notes you can tell me where I went wrong.
- Keep getting the Error “This device cannot start Code 10″ trying to use it as a USB modem. And it keeps giving me the error upon software installation at the “usbnet-pre.inf” phase. When I check it under my Windows device manager it has the “! device cannot start”
-As far as the wi-fi connection- I get it to connect and see it as a network “computer to computer” connection, but no Internet access.

I'm having the same no internet access despite a network connection too. Anyone have ideas?
For your usb issue: try disabling the device, turn on the usb tethering on your phone with it connected to your computer, then re-enable the device. That worked for me, but same no internet problem as with wifi.

either way, it's nice to have in a pinch. thanks again.

Hi
Great write up. I am having a problem at the end. I did all the steps but when i try to connect with the AoNet from my computer it asks me for a security key. Am i doing something wrong?
August 14th, 2009 at 6:35 pm
Were do I make the donation @?
August 14th, 2009 at 7:20 pm
Go here for My Tether donation version:
http://mytether.net/
August 14th, 2009 at 7:22 pm
Hmm… it seems like you need to find the right AoNet, try rebooting your computer and the phone and connecting again.
August 14th, 2009 at 7:23 pm
If you follow all the steps carefully you should easily be able to do it. If you have more trouble, try getting some help from a friend, it can't hurt.
August 14th, 2009 at 7:26 pm
Try resetting your computer and the phone, sometimes it's your Windows that causes network problems and a simple reset usually solves them.
August 14th, 2009 at 7:27 pm
Make sure you have the unlimited data plan from Sprint, otherwise you WILL see a $300 bill.
August 14th, 2009 at 7:29 pm
Did you install Novacom, open your command prompt, and went into the right directory that has Novacom installed?
August 14th, 2009 at 7:30 pm
Hmmm… weird… I got the donation version and it works flawlessly. If you want to use it often, I highly recommend that route.
August 14th, 2009 at 7:31 pm
I believe so, this app is supposed to run in the background but let me test it, will have updates on that soon with a new blog post.
August 14th, 2009 at 7:32 pm
Sure bud!
August 14th, 2009 at 7:34 pm
Yes, the donation version has an easier install thingee supposedly but I haven't tried that. Once you do these steps, you won't have to do them again, that's the beauty of it. (Just installation steps are slight pain if you get stuck.)

August 17th, 2009 at 8:29 pm
Hi Japclev,
Try setting your SSID to something else. You should actually get TWO new SSIDs show up on your WiFi.
Also, try rebooting your computer and the phone the very first time you use it, sometimes that can fix things quickly.

thank you for making this simple! the other day i paid for tether but could not figure out how to install it. I now have this version installed. what do i have to do to upgrade to the paid version?
August 17th, 2009 at 10:34 pm
You have to go to http://MyTether.Net and pay for it. I only provide instructions on how to install the free version.

Ok I'm having the hardest time & I do not understand why. When I had the instinct I did it easily, but this palm is a toughy. It won't even let me download java, or virtual box. Says application to open/save it can't be found. Please help me :-/
August 18th, 2009 at 7:20 pm
I tried 8 times! Prompt stated download complete but nothing. What am I doing wrong?

Please help…. I've been working on this for like 4 hours… I'm all the way down to where you go in and change the directory to go to the sdk/bin file…. for some reason, that command doesn't work to change my directory. The program is there, I've done all the steps prior, but I just can't get the directory to change for me so that I can get to the root directory and tether my Pre.
Are you able to help?
August 21st, 2009 at 11:31 pm
Try using the “tab” button after typing the first 3 letters of the directory, it will fill it in for you. This will help those problems with Windows command prompt where there are spaces in the directory names.

August 22nd, 2009 at 9:44 pm
You are in the emulator mode, make sure your Palm Pre is connected to your computer via a USB cable and make sure to “just charge” when you connect your phone and try the novacom again.
August 23rd, 2009 at 11:13 am
when I type the command- novacom -t open tty://, it just says failed to connect to server? I'm not sure what I am doing wrong, I extracted the novaterm1 into the sdk bin…. is there anything else I have to do to install the novaterm1?
August 24th, 2009 at 3:54 am
ive been trying to do this for 8 hours… when i open up the cmd prompt,,, i try typing the thing in bold and it says it is not recognized as an internal or external command… may this be because when i extract (attempt to extract) the novaterm1 thing it says access is denied… what do i do i really want to do this but i simply cant.
thanks in advance
August 25th, 2009 at 3:22 am

Hmmm i got to the part about opening a command prompt. not sure if im doing that right. i get the novacom thing and everytime i try to open it i see the lil black box like the “for the newbies” picture for like half a second. then its gone, it seems like something is keeping it from opening. p.s. im using windows vista. hopefully i didnt jus waste 2hrs of my life. please help!
August 25th, 2009 at 3:36 am
You need to open up the novacom from command line by typing, do not click on the file from Windows browser, try googling “Vista command prompt”.
August 25th, 2009 at 4:02 pm
It seems that a number of people are having the same problem. It seems like a successful install but no icon shows up on my PRE

Did you try scrolling down? I know that sounds stupid but it took me 3 days before I knew how to scroll right/left to find other menus.
If not, please tell me what the version of your WebOS is, I am using 1.1.0 btw.
August 25th, 2009 at 4:12 pm
I did. It is not listed unde the List Apps command either.
I am on 1.1
August 25th, 2009 at 4:16 pm
Hmm… that is weird, do you have other homebrew apps installed? Btw, I did this on a factory defaulted Palm Pre. If you have other aftermarket apps on the Palm Pre, problems could lie with those but otherwise, you will have to ask the developer Raja over at http://mytether.net. He's very helpful so I recommend that as your last resort. I only wrote a guide on how to do this but Raja is the one who developed it so he should be able to help you for sheezy.

August 26th, 2009 at 7:42 pm
The tab option isn't working either… I've been at it and I've tried a bunch of different ways to change the directory. Is there possibly something else that's wrong that won't allow me to type in the correct directory. It should be c:program filespalmsdkbin but nothing I do is making that work for me.
Thanks so much for your help.
August 26th, 2009 at 8:58 pm
yooooo when i type in my command prompt is saying 'my tether' address is wrong? how do i fix that?
August 27th, 2009 at 2:55 pm
You can analyze My Tether's scripts ending in .sh if you'd like to see the inner workings.
August 27th, 2009 at 3:03 pm
Did you select “Just Charge” option when you connect your Palm Pre to the computer? You need to make sure you have internet connection on your phone before making this work also.
August 28th, 2009 at 12:40 pm
it feels great, now i can connect several laptops at work with my phone..lol., thanks once again.
August 28th, 2009 at 4:13 pm
Didn't see my post but i am not a computer guy the installation was easy just remember turn off all firewalls this was a problem for me and after you install it make sure you turn off your phone and computer to reboot the systems. i only have two questions?
1 If Sprint does an update on my phone do I have to install the program again?
2 If so do you have to be on the internet and can i install the program on my laptop.
I would hate to be out on a business trip and have no internet.
AGAIN THANKS THIS IS REALLY UNBELIEVABLE!!!!!!!
August 28th, 2009 at 11:45 pm
Sure, glad you got it working!!!
August 28th, 2009 at 11:55 pm

Hello, followed the directions and MYTethering installed as shown. When I try to tether, with DHCP on it will connect but does not DHCP so the laptop I am using to connect to is able to access the internet. It gives it a 169 IP address and a 255.255.0.0 subnet and nothing else.
Any Ideas,
Thanks,
Finman
August 29th, 2009 at 3:54 pm
I have installed the 2.0 $10 app but am having problems connecting to the internet. My laptop will connect to the network but it always says “limited connectivity.” I have disabled the windows vista firewall and tried resetting my laptop and phone several times but nothing is helping. Any ideas?
August 30th, 2009 at 12:39 pm
Hmmm… try resetting both your phone and computer, that usually fixes the problem.
August 30th, 2009 at 12:40 pm
Try setting the SSID to something else, you will then actually see 2 different SSIDs from your phone.
August 30th, 2009 at 6:31 pm

Did you check “Just Charge” option when you connected your phone to the computer?
August 30th, 2009 at 8:44 pm
The “Just Charge” option solve the issue with installing “My tethering”. As for the “usbnet-pre.inf” file, where can I find that. I looked through both posts but could not find it. Can you help me again?
Thanks…

Hi…. I have a question. I was successful at getting my palm pre tethered to my laptop. I wanted to tether my palm pre to my desktop pc and wasn't able to successfully do that. I have Windows XP… a tower…. I did all the steps over again on my PC, but I don't know how to find the Aonet because my pc doesn't have a wireless network display like my laptop does… What are the tricks to getting the palm pre tethered to a normal desktop pc?? The only thing I can really open is the network connections box through my control panel.. any suggestions??

I also got this error. It was because when I connected my Palm Pre with the USB cable, I chose USB Drive on the Palm Pre's screen. I had to open “My Computer” right click on Palm Pre and click eject. That was my only speed bump. Great help thank you!
September 21st, 2009 at 1:37 am
try typing command prompt in your start button search bar. I had that same problem and I did that, and the command prompt came up ez.
September 21st, 2009 at 1:44 am
I have vista, I just clicked start on my actual computer, and in the bottom search box, typed command prompt, and used that command prompt, and it worked. I had that same flash problem… may work 4 U 2

This is great! Thank you so much for your help…I don't have to tap into my neighbors internet anymore. You really know how to give step-by-step instructions for those of us “tech dummies” to understand.
Seriously, this is awesome!
September 22nd, 2009 at 12:43 pm
Great guide, but some logic fails me…
If I can download novacom on the PC I want to tether, it's already online! Seems to defeat the purpose a bit. Is there another way to SSH in with a client I already have? (putty in my case.)
September 22nd, 2009 at 4:01 pm
The first time you connect to your Palm Pre, you will need to use some kind of serial connection to the Pre since there's no SSH installed. I believe you can use putty too but I haven't tried it. But once you get in the Pre and install SSH, you can thereafter SSH into it via putty. Hope that clears things a bit.
September 22nd, 2009 at 7:25 pm
Has anyone gotten the free version to work on a x64 system? I'm on Windows 7 x64 and am having the same problem everyone else with my config is. I can connect to the emu and install just fine, but just connecting (to charge) with my palm pre I get “unable to find device” when typing the novacom command. Going to try a Vista x86 and report back if that resolves it.
September 22nd, 2009 at 7:27 pm
I've also tried running both novacom and cmd as Admin with nogo…
September 23rd, 2009 at 12:15 am
I was successfully able to load this through my Vista 32bit system. So I guess for now, the work-around to x64 is to find a x86 machine:/
September 24th, 2009 at 12:37 am

September 28th, 2009 at 11:42 pm
YES!!! I had that comment too! On the video all they say is “type this thing” and dont even show the key they hit. To make it ncrazier my “thing” is not a single line but two dotted lines on my keyboard |. Ugh it was a pain and I wish it was in the directions
September 28th, 2009 at 11:45 pm
So I have followed all of the instructions to the tee. And I am sooooooo close to getting this to work. The problem is in the video they say to download Mojo SDK and Virtual box, but nothing after that! Not what options to pick to install them, or what goes where. I think this is the problem with the connection. And again I am sooo close… my computer picks up a signal from my phone and it connects but it doesnt connect to the actual internet. So how the heck do I do this fellas? This is my first ever hack and you can consider me like a 3rd grader circa 1955 (before computers really). But what do I do to get this to work? I tried to select all of the defaults in virtualbox and created a virtual drive I guess, but it wants to boot from a disk. I don't know what I'm doing fellas and really could use a hand. Thanks in advance.
Dave
September 28th, 2009 at 11:50 pm
I think netgear has a USB signal receiver that would allow for your internet access to be received on your desktop. Check out netgear. I think that'll be your winner for the desktop.
September 29th, 2009 at 3:42 am
Oh sorry about that, I guess it'd be different for various keyboards so.
September 29th, 2009 at 3:43 am
Try rebooting your computer, sometimes that will do the trick.
September 29th, 2009 at 9:06 am
My friend, thank you for taking the time to reply. I know you're not getting paid so your kindness in spelling this out is making all of the difference for me. Rebooting didn't work
So I have two questions:
I've downloaded virtualbox. What options do I need to select to create the virtual pre?
I've downloaded mojo. what options do I need to select to make it work? (When i go with just the defaults it wants to boot from a disk)
Otherwise I am good! Signal is coming from the phone, computer recognizes it, icon is on the phone etc. It's just when i (PC) or my girlfriend (Mac) connects, we get connected, but no internet. I suspect it has something to do with virtualbox or mojo.
September 29th, 2009 at 3:22 pm
I second this- MyTether etc is all set up on Pre- Aonet is recognized and my iTouch & laptop seem to be connected but cannot connect to the internet- have reset/restarted both but still does not connect to the internet- fortunately with the set up connecting via USB does connect to the internet but am fathomed by the wifi set up- any info on how to trouble shoot this will be greatly appreciated!
September 29th, 2009 at 4:05 pm
palm disabled the my tether app with the WebOS 1.2 update, so that is probably why it's not working. The developer is working on it, or so I hear.
September 29th, 2009 at 4:16 pm
that sucks- only I haven't upgraded to 1.2 yet- so not yet valid- I still have version 1.1.0- is 1.2 out yet?
September 29th, 2009 at 4:24 pm
Hi there, the Virtualbox and Mojo have really nothing to do with it, we just need the drivers and novacom from it. Once the app is installed, there's no need to connect to your computer. There's supposedly TWO wifi connections you will see, connect to the AoNET I believe for the free version.
September 29th, 2009 at 4:29 pm
Oh really? Good thing I didn't update to 1.2… Hmm….
September 29th, 2009 at 9:27 pm
Ok, my question is, how much can you use it before sprint gets suspicious. Cause I could use this for my PS3 when i'm at my friends house, but i was just wondering. I already use a huge amount of data on my phone, as i use it to get torrents every now and then.
September 30th, 2009 at 7:35 pm
Let's just put it this way, I wouldn't use it for downloading videos but for simple web surfing.

I am not able to get my computer to recognize my wireless wi-fi that has been set up. I have disabled wi-fi on the Pre and then ran the app like normal and it says I have a wi-fi setup, however my computer doesn't recognize it at all. Do you think it's because I have windows 7? I also can't find the USB net to try the USB method. Any Help would be appreciated. Oh by the way I just updated the software to the most recent one. Please let me know if that is why it's not working as well. Thanks.

Try the paid version, I think the update 1.2 doesn't work anymore with free version.

i have a question,, im actualize my pre,, whit the new webos 1.2.0 ,, and my tether dosent work any more,, somebody can help me,, pleasee,,,
October 2nd, 2009 at 11:25 pm
I have it installed and the program says tethering enabled but I cannot find the signal with my laptop
October 3rd, 2009 at 7:12 pm
i did it and i got bad address. WTF?
October 3rd, 2009 at 10:43 pm
I installed the free version as above. My Tether is installed on the handheld and I can connect to AoNet from my laptops, but can't not browse the web. I get 404s regardless of the URL. I am running 1.1. I don't see any required browser settings to be changed on the laptop, and I've rebooted, but still no worky.
Also, I noticed that it tethering, both Wifi and USB, continually change to disabled. And, there is no disable time option in the free version.
I'd like some reassurance this will work before I spend $10 for a product that hasn't been proven to even work. Any ideas would be great.

October 5th, 2009 at 12:17 pm
which one would give me better connections speed? setting My Tether up as a wifi router or as a usb access point?
October 5th, 2009 at 12:38 pm
USBnet still works fine on Windoze, even with the web OS update (haven't been able to successfully create a LAN connection on my MAC tho…) Wifi is a no go however; AoNet is not broadcasting (at least not the free version) … i'll try the pay version and see what develops.
October 5th, 2009 at 8:51 pm
Alright i did everything in the instructions to a T even said that it installed and went back to the root@castle screen but the app is not appearing in my phone. Any help on this?
Thanks!
October 6th, 2009 at 2:19 am

hey there i just got my palm pre and i installed the software for wifi tethering but when i turn it on nothing pucks it up my ipod or my desktop or my labtob is there some kink of glitch thats stopin me from connection please anyone HELP
October 7th, 2009 at 5:52 am
This app is outstanding. I have been using it regularly for about two months. Since the WebOS 1.2 update I'm unable to use the Wifi to broadcast a connection. However the USB tether works as usual. Since the update I uninstalled MyTether v1.5 and re installed it with the same results. I would be more than happy to purchase v2.0 if it can work normally with the WebOS 1.2 update.
Thanks for you time,
Wade

v1.5 will not work with WebOS 1.2 or greater – and I don't know if he plans on releasing another free version that will work with WebOS 1.2+.

Remember that the Wired Equivalent Privacy (WEP) encryption method is very insecure and the weakest choice for a wireless network so be careful anyways lot of “evil doers” out there! Otherwise great article.

Thank you a million!!! It took me awhile because I first tried it on vista and couldn't figure it out. Then I tried it on XP but I already plugged my Pre in before installing Pal SDK so the comp didn't start the wizard driver. I finally got it on my in-laws comp to work. Some people were saying that the free version didn't work for wifi but mine works just fine.
October 22nd, 2009 at 6:44 pm
so are you saying that you cant use vista to do this i have to use a xp and download everything all over again? also when its done and you got the tether to work can you use it on a laptop that has vista on it
October 22nd, 2009 at 11:48 pm

Is your Pre in developer mode? If it is then just take you pre and plug it into a different port your computer will see it as a different device and reinstall it. Also what OS are you using (xp or vista)?
November 1st, 2009 at 11:48 pm
I am having this exact issue. Everything ran/installed fine and when I turn it on it gives me a notification DHCP is on but its not broadcasting. I have 2 computers and the psp all scanning for adhoc and infrastructure and none pick up the “aonet” or anything remotely similar. All I see are the aps that were already there.

Hey! This is an amazing post. I got the free version to work the first time, but now I can't get a wifi signal with my new laptop that runs windows vista 64bit. I'm a complete noob when it comes to this stuff, I was wondering if there was anything I could do to get it to work? Do I need to do anything special with the windows vista networking to find the signal? Or could it be my phone? Any thoughts would be appreciated….

I am having trouble connecting my computer to my Pre for Wi-Fi. I have installed everything correctly and the app is working. When I go to view wireless connections, AoNet does not appear. I have restarted both my computer and Pre and it does not help. It doesn't work with other devices either. I have also turned Wi-Fi on my Pre off noticing that it may be a problem. On my pre it says that Wi-Fi Tethering is enabled. I need help!!! If someone could email me at bwebbofar@gmail.com that would be a great help. Thanks.
November 5th, 2009 at 12:11 am
So I just read that using v1.2.1 may be my problem. Has anybody worked around this or is there a new app or update for this to work. If not will usb tethering still work?
email responses to: bwebbofar@gmail.com
Thanks.

The same thing happend to me after the damn Pre automatically updated itself when my battery died, I knew Palm was up to something with this “random” request for an update the day after I got the “wifi” to work.
Any luck with figuring out a fix?
November 19th, 2009 at 8:16 pm
Dang, I downloaded the $15.00 my Tether App and it was GLORIOUS, worked perfect, watched Youtube with good streaming, read the NY Times online, checked Facebook and then I started to receive suspicious “update” request after only having the WiFi for two legit days. I chose to ignore the “update” requests and still had my WiFi, then my damn phone died and when I put it back on the charger, the freaken PRE UPDATED itself, lol, low and behold NO MORE WIFI!!!! It's the darn update that took the best capability PRE has away from me.
Now I just sit here and hope that someone figures out how I can go back to the glory days. I'll shed a tear from time to time just thinking about how great it was, and man was it something, but at least I can say I experienced it for a few days. I guess it was too good to be true, but it's better to have had WIFI up and running for a couple days, then to never have had it at all…..sigh…

December 5th, 2009 at 11:16 pm
Hi,
I installed the software onto my Pre but my computer doesnt see any networks at all. First question…will the fact that my computer has the Sprint Mobilebroadband software on it mess it up even when its not running or the antenna is plugged in? Also when I finished the install it didnt give me the rootcastle prompt but a rootpalm something or other but the app showed up on my Pre anyway. It also allows me to enable the DHCP but then when I go to my computer and look for the networks in range and ther are quite a few none show up. But when I have the mobile antenna in it sees like 7 networks in range buuut none are the Aonet one. Yes the antenna on the computer seems to be fine but also even when I have the mobile broadband antenna in it still doesnt see the Palm pre's network. What am I doing wrong? Should I uninstall the other software from Sprint?
December 6th, 2009 at 2:24 pm
I did everything above and installed My Tether and it comes up as an app when I turn on DHCP it turn on etc but my computer does not see the network (Wifi connection) I have windows 7 Anything to check?
Thanks

Ok so, I'm also one of those stuck at the “novacom -t open tty://”. My phone is on Just Charge mode, has a good EVDO connection and is on Developers mode. But it still says unable to find device. Any help? Thanks!
December 11th, 2009 at 5:46 pm
When I type in the novacom command into command prompt the next thing that comes up says: root@palm-webos-device instead of root@castle. I then tried anyways to type in the wget command and it didn't work as I expected. Anything would be helpful. Thanks.

hey, i got everything to work with the rooting and installing. the program is on my phone and i can enable tethering and on my phone it says its working. but i cannot find the “AoNet” on my computers wifi. i have restarted both my comp and the phone several times. do i need to leave my phone in dev mode, or do i need to disconnect my phone from wifi? anything weird like that that could be stopping the wifi signal from being discovered? Thank you

is there anyone still uses this feature without any problem?

Hey just curious, where it says to “reset” the phone after getting into the Developer Mode. Does that mead it’ll reset the phone fully, as in loss of contacts, mms msgs, photos, current apps, any and all other data? or does it just mean its a restart for the phone to prepare for the rooting procedure?
Thanks a million

Great Direction… I followed your instruction to the T step by step everything went perfectly till I tried to connect my Laptop. The directions say, “Finally, go to your computer and connect to “AoNet” on your computer’s wireless network. You should be connected fairly soon to the internet now.” My computer is NOT finding that AoNet network? am I missing something? also I have webOs 1.3.5.1 and am trying to get the FREE Tether to work
Please Advise
January 22nd, 2010 at 7:31 pm
I have the same issue as chrism0182.
I went by the instructions and got everything working perfectly. But I have an intermittent problem of my internet stop working. Usually happens after a few hours of (excellent) internet usage.
My PC says that my Linux USB Ethernet/RNDIS Gadget is still connected, but I have no internet connectivity.
I do notice that on my Pre there is no “EV” in the top right corner. That means my Palm isn’t on the EV-DO network.
To fix I have to restart my Pre.
Does anybody else get this? My guess somehow tethering is causing my Pre to loose its EV-DO signal or Sprint to kick me off??? Any Ideas?

Hey have the app installed in my Pre, I have WiFi Tethering On but none of the the computers in my house recognize the Pre. WHY?? Does every computer need the drives or could it find it like my router does?
January 26th, 2010 at 8:47 pm
Instructions are perfect. Installation was simple. However, I too cannot see AoNet to connect to. I suspect this is being blocked with webOs 1.3.5.x.
Anyone find a work-around yet?
January 26th, 2010 at 9:17 pm
I was able to install the application onto my pre beautifully but it doesn’t seem to broadcast any signal over wifi. I have a mac so this seems to be my only option as i cant seem to find a USB driver. Somebody Please Help!
January 26th, 2010 at 9:33 pm
Ok folks I got it figured out this version is 1.5.1 and since the update this one dosent work. The Pay one is 2.0 and that one does work. But after searching the internet there is a Free version of 2.0.
BUT I HAVE TO WARN YOU!! IF YOU INSTALL 2.0 IT WILL DISABLE YOUR CAMERA. SO MAKE YOUR DECISION DO YOU WANT YOUR CAMERA OR HAVE A WIFI SPOT!!!!!!
January 27th, 2010 at 1:35 am
D MONEY -thanks for the insight but the 2.0 version no longer works with the new update from Palm. I think we are all waiting for a work around for those tht have run the newest update on the Pre. Hopefully this will come soon.
January 27th, 2010 at 9:11 am
Hey Brian. It did work with the 1.3 update (the latest update). I have the update on Pre and I was shocked that it worked. I first installed the 1.5 and none of the computers would recognize it. Then I Googled My Tether Free Download and it led me to a Youtube site. This video has a MegaVideo link where you could download it for free. I followed the instructions to update (this took a couple of seconds) and POW!! Everything worked great. I was able to get WIFI on my other phones, other computers and even on my PSP. BUT MY CAMERA DIDNT WORK. You know you have 2.0 when screen at the bottom has USB/OPTIONS/LCD (It has to have that LCD). Not just USB/OPTIONS.
I use my camera cause I have kids and I was pissed. I had to use webOSDoctor (hardreset) to get my camera back. What’s crazy is it worked good and the connection was fast. But I’d rather have my camera and if I need Wifi on the go I could just go to Starbucks.
January 27th, 2010 at 11:56 am
Has anyone tried the USB version? Does that work?
January 28th, 2010 at 3:16 pm
Mine was same as D money, i am going to have to reset my phone so i can get my camera, but internet was working great and was very fast just as fast as my wifi at work
January 29th, 2010 at 4:28 pm
Has anyone tried this with the Pre Plus? It would be nice to NOT pay Verizon $40/mo for this.
January 30th, 2010 at 6:05 pm
I am one of the many who have had problems trying to get novacom to connect — keeps saying “unable to find device”.
I have winxp sp2 and have tried uninstalling and reinstalling the novacom driver (uninstall via device manager, right-click on Palm Novacom inside Palm Novacom Modules and click Uninstall), tried uninstalling and reinstalling the Palm SDK, have gone out and back into dev mode on the phone, tried using different USB ports — nothing works.
The odd thing is that I can get novacom to connect from my son’s Vista machine. So I suspect the problem is on my laptop, *not* a problem with the phone.
Any suggestions?
February 1st, 2010 at 5:02 pm
hello… i havent seen anyone else with this problem…i have everything installed correct i turned my wi fi on and look for wireless network on my computer and i dont see my pre connection the AONET. DOES ANYONE KNOW WHATS GOING ON
February 2nd, 2010 at 9:12 am
Hey Dee go up around 5 or 7 post and read D Money what he put works. But he’s right once you upgrade to 2.0 it works good (the Wifi) but you loose your camera. It happened to me too. So you have to figure is the Wifi or the camera more important. I choose the camera.
February 4th, 2010 at 2:58 am

Well after multiple attempts of installing, uninstalling and reinstalling I have managed to get it to work. This is what I did and I hope it helps you all some how.
Went to this site: http://www.megaupload.com/?d=PH482N2I
Waited the 45 seconds till the free “Regular” download was available then clicked the “Regular Download” button.
Restarted the laptop and the palm pre like 50 times (or so it felt like)
Put the pre in developer mode (webos20090606)
Ran the “Tether Installer.exe” (Twice not sure why I had to do that but I did)
When I first ran it I got multiple errors so I restarted the laptop and it worked. I also plugged the usb into a different port.
Finally I said forget this its not going to work and at which time the laptop found the damn ad-hoc.
I have these versions
Win 7 Ultimate
Pre 1.3.5.1
My Tether 2.0.4
PS this is how i am posting right now via my palm pre wifi tether
Good Luck!!!

All you guys who keep saying that it they cant find the Wifi connection you have to follow my instructions on the post above. It has to upgrade to 2.0 the full version but it will disable your camera BEWARE. If you didnt see it above here you again (Go to the Youtube site after you Google it):
It did work with the 1.3 update (the latest update). I have the update on Pre and I was shocked that it worked. I first installed the 1.5 and none of the computers would recognize it. Then I Googled My Tether Free Download and it led me to a Youtube site. This video has a MegaVideo link where you could download it for free. @Toilet Paper: Thanks for posting that, but when I try to run it, I keep getting:
System.Net.Sockets.SocketException: The requested address is not valid in its context 127.0.0.1:0
Anyone have any ideas? (Note that I have not been able to successfully connect to my Pre via novacom, either.)
February 10th, 2010 at 4:54 pm
could you please post the link where u get the newest free version. I have looked everywhere for the link.
February 12th, 2010 at 2:14 am
I used 2 use “pdanet” on my Treo 755p. Never had any probs, other than it crawled at 2.4 mbs. I’ve been reading the forum & it sounds like I can only have either my camera or the WiFi. Has anyone come up w/something that will allow me 2 have both? I actually like this camera, but I need internet on my lap top.
February 12th, 2010 at 11:42 pm
If you’ve been trying to get this to work and you keep getting the message “unable to find device” from novacom, here’s another thing to check.
If you have VMware installed, try bringing up Task Manager and killing vmware-tray.exe.
I have no idea why, but that process was preventing novacom from connecting to my Pre!
The way I tracked it down was to use MSConfig (Start / Run / msconfig / OK). I went to the Startup tab and disabled and reenabled various combinations until I narrowed it down to that one program. Many reboots later, I can now get into the Pre!
Even if you don’t have VMware installed, if you’re having trouble, you might try using this method to find what process is preventing you from connecting!
February 13th, 2010 at 5:15 pm
I need help. I got the Mobil hotspot app installed on my sprint palm pre. It worked great the first night on my dell, acre and on my sony viao laptops. The next day, the sony viao connects fine through the wifi, however I cannot get the Dell to connect, it sees the wifi network, when I try to connect to it, it says automatic and just stays there. I really need this to work. Please help.
February 15th, 2010 at 10:00 am
wow thanks for all the help. after exhausting myself i finally got this thing working. major thanks to d money and for anyone without the camera just unpatch and reboot and youll be able to use it again.

Doesn’t anyone find it funny that the developer hasn’t posted any thing since OCTOBER 23RD OF LAST YEAR… do NOT waste your time this doesn’t work…get a Windows Mobile device
February 22nd, 2010 at 6:07 pm
Trust me yall. It does work. And works good IF YOU USE THE 2.0 VERSION. Google ( my tether 2.0.4 free download ) and it will take you to a Youtube link. There you could get 2.0.4 free upgrade it from 1.3 and it works good.
BUT LIKE I SAID BEFORE: BEWARE IT WILL DISABLE YOUR CAMERA. IF YOU DO IT AND WANT YOUR CAMERA BACK YOU HAVE TO HARD RESET IT OR USE WEB DOCTOR.
Good Luck!!!
February 27th, 2010 at 2:11 am
I did everything but my computer cannot find the network. Everything else seems to have worked fine except this. I’ve tried resetting both pre & comp but nothing. Tried using a different computer to see if it could see the network but nothing. Help please!!
February 28th, 2010 at 8:27 am
for those of you who still get the “bad adress” failure message… I was able to fix it by connecting my pre to my home wireless network – it just worked fine for me… If you got none, bad luck..

March 2nd, 2010 at 2:30 pm
I have the latest Palm os (1.4) and it works using the cable but will not find the wireless. The camera works great. This I can live with as it lets you use the phone as a modem but you have to be wired to the computer.
March 5th, 2010 at 3:40 am
lakemann,
it is good to know that the camera still works when using a usb cable. Is there anyway that sprint could find out that the phone is being used as a modem? I am already paying for unlimited data on my phone, now as just want to use it a as modem but I don’t want to pay an additional fee for phone as modem cause it is stupid to double paying for the same sevice.
March 5th, 2010 at 7:02 pm
hmmmm how do you do it for the mac!!!!!!!!!
March 7th, 2010 at 9:44 pm
So does the free version work with web os 1.4.0 wirelesly???
March 8th, 2010 at 10:58 pm
I think the free version stopped working since 1.3.1 but I haven’t tested the free version w/ 1.4 yet.
March 8th, 2010 at 11:03 pm
I don’t know how to do it on a mac but it shouldn’t be too hard as Mac has unix prompt. You just need to find the driver/software for Palm Pre to Mac. If all else fails, use your friend’s Windows.
March 9th, 2010 at 7:45 pm
hi I have vista and my pre is updated to the newest os system. Could you email me about the paid verson and if this will work with my setup
thanks
March 10th, 2010 at 1:18 pm
The app installed on my pre, however I get an auth error saying that computer sharing is not allowed, also when I try to use my web on my pre, it will not work, it says I must enable networking.
What is the deal?
March 10th, 2010 at 2:27 pm
Will work fine, see our latest post on that, I just tested working fine with WebOS 1.4.

March 15th, 2010 at 11:18 am
Nice Job – I was looking for an XP sdk It seems palm is only providing the Vista and Windows 7 SDK. Any idea where it may be located? Going to check out ssh next!
March 15th, 2010 at 3:54 pm
I am having same issue as Kevin. I have installed everything as described but my laptop does not pick up a wifi signal from the Pre. I have turned off both the wifi and blue tooth settings but still no AoNet network. Great post!
March 15th, 2010 at 3:54 pm
I have also reset the phone and laptop several times, fyi…
March 15th, 2010 at 4:06 pm

March 16th, 2010 at 5:08 am
Ok, I’m stuck here, I have windows 7 and cannot get past this. no root@castle comes up or anything. Please help someone
“Open up a command prompt (for Win XP) and go to your sdk/bin directory. For me, it was in C:\Program Files\Palm\SDK\bin. See the screenshot below for newbies.
Now, connect your phone to your computer via the USB cable.
Once connected, type this on your command prompt that’s still open:
novacom -t open tty://
You should get a terminal such as below with root@castle as the prompt
March 16th, 2010 at 4:12 pm
someone else should post a problem and have no one reply. the success rate of setting up the pre tethered is about 1/100. the steps change at every new OS. its PIMA.
March 16th, 2010 at 7:35 pm
I feel like the last kid to get picked on a team. Wont no one help out the kid that sucks. In this case its me w/ computers. Hey, thanks so much for the instructions, this will seriously help out my no internet crap problem.. However I am surprised no one has asked this yet, or they did and I was too lazy to find it, I have a mac.. and have no idea how to get into the dos in the mac, or if thats even possible. Are there separate directions for those who have a macbook pro and palm pre? I would appreciate any help, and thanks again for everything else you’ve put up so far!

hi guys, i read something in the past that talked about the legal process of tethering. There is an area in the contract that said any unauthorize use of tethering is against company policy. With that said, they can disconnect the service and seek for criminal charges based on the usage value(s).
I deeply want to tether since i am paying for the unlimited data for the phone but not as a modem. I am still researching about unauthorized tethering usage.
Please if any one knows something, let me know so that I can stop researching and not waisting my time
April 1st, 2010 at 7:50 pm
I purchased and installed My Tether. got through the installation fine, when I turn it on on the phone, I see the computer connect to it, it lists the computer on the phone however the computer does not go anywhere on the internet, pinging gets me no replies. It’s as if the computer is connected to the phone, but the phone is not getting it to the internet. Any thoughts?

heya i have an issue with this<.< im running windows vista 32bit and i do the comand line part with wget~and it cant open install.php because its a read only file~ any ideas?
April 6th, 2010 at 8:57 pm
I follow all the steps and it all went well – the only thing is that I cant see my WiFi connection from my lptp. No biggie – I follow the steps on USB Tethering on Vista and Windows 7 by mu7efcer (mytether.net) and I am golden!!!! Cheezing like a motha…just ran a speed-test and my DL is almost 1.5 hahaha
. I really only wanted to get my Pre set up for those times when I go and stay with my parents in PR, or with my in-laws, or at a hotel anyway, so I am very happy camper right about now!!! So big ups for all the good info that I found on this page. As a fact, I am considering donating and getting the 2.0 app just to see if I can get the WiFi going after all – I wouldn’t want to get it going without the WEP capability anyway…know what I mean!
April 7th, 2010 at 5:30 pm
I have one question…when you get the WiFi connection.. can you use that for a gaming system like a PlayStation 3 or Xbox360..??
What I mean is like can you use the WiFi internet connection to go on Xbox LIVE or PlayStation Network.. just wondering..
April 9th, 2010 at 2:16 am
Can’t see the AoNet network on any wifi device. Pre looks like its working fine. Says that wireless is enabled.
April 13th, 2010 at 11:35 pm
I am having problems with getthing the command box to come up, can you please help?
April 19th, 2010 at 5:02 pm
I forgot to mention, many people have been worried that this version disables the camera for good. It doesn’t, only while the program is enabled. This latest version does not cause this issue. Also, you will be prompted for a WEP security code. To find this, go to mytether on your Pre after you enable it, and look under options. This will show you your network name and key. You can also change it.
April 21st, 2010 at 3:25 pm
I got the install on pre, but not showing how my computer shows the AONET?
Any help on this would be great, what is my next move?
Do i need to create an additional network connection?
What exactly is the process of getting to the internet.
I am pretty savvy, but this is over a week now, because of some simple command line errors and spaces not shown or told exactly.
What do i do exactly once i have completed my install according to the video, DCHP on…
DO i leave wifi on? or turn off then restart mytether?
does USB stay on since i am tethering via USB cable?
HELP
April 22nd, 2010 at 3:33 pm
I have installed everything and my tether is up and working on my phone but i do not see aonet on my computers wireless networks ?? can someone help please
April 22nd, 2010 at 11:28 pm
This is an old version of MyTether that no longer works with the latest Palm version update. This is why no one can see the AoNet network. Research for the 2.1 newer version of MyTether. 1.0/1.4 etc. WILL NOT WORK.

Open up a command prompt (for Win XP) and go to your sdk/bin directory. For me, it was in C:\Program Files\Palm\SDK\bin. See the screenshot below for newbies.
1:21amBrent
you know how to bring up the command prompt right?
1:21amMe
yes
but it says c:\users\amanda
1:22amBrent
type in “cd/”
that will bring you back
then just type in the directory, whatever it is
1:24amMe
it says “program” is not recognized
1:24amBrent
did you install the palm pre sdk?

I think you might be typing 0(zero) instead of O(uppercase letter). it worked for me by just copying from this site and pasting to command prompt. However, i still have not been able to tether via usb or wifi. im going to work with the 2.0 version next as it looks like they are saying that 1.5 doesn’t work with palmos 1.4.
One other note: I don’t know if palm sdk has changed recently or not, but it looks like they call it PDK now and in turn the sub folder is now PDK, not SDK on my system.
April 25th, 2010 at 9:13 am
Thanks for the tip about the zero and the O, I got the app installed. Too bad it doesn’t work for me either. Let me know how 2.0 works for you.

I am still struggling getting everything to work. i have a MacBook and a 1.4.1.1 Spring Palm Pre. I am trying to get it set up as a Mobile Hotspot. Everytime I try my MacBook does not recognize the wifi setup. Any suggestions and can you walk me through the steps to getting it setup as a wifi system? Also, do I need to purchase the tether system or can I use the free one?
April 27th, 2010 at 2:05 pm
BTW, I was told that your carrier needs to enable the tethering ability for the service contract for which your PRE is enabled, meaning that if you do all this, you still cannot connect, since your service provider needs to enable the tethering.
So, what is the need for all this crap, and it does not work?
WTF?

help!! my computer cant seem to find the wireless conection. i tried restarting my computer and my palm pre. if anyone could help me i would much appreciate it.
May 24th, 2010 at 1:08 pm
I have set this free version up on my new Palm Pre Plus from AT&T, and having issues with the WIFI. Basically it shows it working per the application, but I cannot find the SSID “AoNet”. But I got the USB Tether to work with my Ubuntu laptop.
I have the phone’s Wifi turned off for searching for networks, and it all seems good according to the My Tether application. Just cannot find the broadcast of Wifi when searching from my laptop.

Hi there. Very easy instructions. I have a MacBookPro and I followed all the instructions. I never got an error. I activate the tether on my pre and everything looks fine. However, I can’t see the AoNet in as a WiFi device. My Pre works on Sprint network. I also couldn’t activate the USB feature. Later on, reading on other post, I tried to read the USB0 IP address and I got a “permission denied”. Any hints about to make it work? I am very interested in the WiFi option. Thanks

I got all the way to:
“Finally, go to your computer and connect to “AoNet” on your computer’s wireless network.
You should be connected fairly soon to the internet now.
If you have trouble connecting, try resetting both your computer and the Palm Pre.
You should also be able to connect multiple devices since your Palm Pre is now also a WiFi Router with DHCP server. ”
I can’t find “AoNet” on my computer’s wireless network. I have restarted my phone and computer. But when I restarted my computer, it “found new hardware” but I don’t know where or how to install. Please help.

i would love a response to my previous post.please help me! can someone tell me where to find “aonet”? i don’t see it in my wireless network. any suggestions?
June 22nd, 2010 at 9:23 am
I want to try installing My Tether but on a Mac. I see many people have asked about this, and there hasn’t been a good response, so I’ll ask the question in a more straightforward way: if I use these same instructions for PC but on a Mac, substituting Command for Terminal, will it work in the same way?

Hello, I have consistently checked the response section of this page since I 1st attempted to use my Tether in December of 2009. Similar to many others I have had the same issue of not being able to see the “Aonet” when trying to connect to the internet while using My Tether on my palm. I have restarted both my laptop and pre, disabled wireless on the pre, and even disable the firewall on my laptop to see what the issue was. I have checked this site periodically and still find it odd that the most popular question for those who can’t find “Aonet” on their computer has yet to be solved. CAN SOMEONE PLEASE HELP!!! The same issue/question has been posted too many times. Does the network have to be manually set up on the computer? Is the web os version on the pre an issue? (Note: I have the free version of MY Tether). Any help will be appreciated. Thanks…
June 25th, 2010 at 2:58 pm
I am have the same problem I think. Not to mention I am not sure what I am doing. I am able to get on the internet on the phone but it is not tethering to the computer for some reason. I am running windows 7 64 Home edition.
Help!

July 19th, 2010 at 10:46 pm
same problem bro …did u figure tht out .. i m runnin vista
July 22nd, 2010 at 2:16 pm
For all of you that can’t find the AoNet network after installing:
You have probably installed the free version of MyTether (1.5.1). Wifi tethering does not work on the free version. If you want a working version for WebOS 1.4.x, try the paid version (version 2.1).
July 24th, 2010 at 12:30 pm
Why hack the wifi… You have a Hot Spot built into it if you are with Verizon…
Seems like senseless fucking around with your phone stuff to me…

Has anyone done this with an AT&T palm pre plus? Did it work?

I’m with a few others to say this does not work with free version, and I or damn sure not paying for it o take the chance that doesnt work. Followed step by step instructions and the teathering installed but the computer does “NOT” find “aonet” so it was a complete waste of time.

Ok. I have figured it out, so I take back my post above. Here is how you do it.
1.) Follow all the steps from original post.
2.) Uninstall version 1. whatever from your phone.
3.) Restart phone.
4.) Go here http://www.mediafire.com/?wj4ujoyoyyv and download this version.
5.) Restart phone.
6.) Enable teathering.
7.) You will see Aonet on your laptop or device. You can change the name and all also se a password. I needed to restart my computer and phone once more after i changed settings.
8.) I am using a laptop now hooked up to my PRE.
July 29th, 2010 at 2:42 pm
Not true. I am currently using free version downloaded from here http://www.mediafire.com/?wj4ujoyoyyv

Well, Ive gone over this again and again. Followed your instructions and others as well. Can get all kinds of cool stuff to work, but my 32bit xp machine will not see AoNet. Also, when I try to hook it up with usb, my system crashes…hard. I’m pretty sure the drivers from gumstick are no good, and those are the only ones I can find. I can’t believe you are still answering people’s questions on this page…Any thoughts on my problem?

August 19th, 2010 at 1:06 am
It really appears that this just doesn’t work on Vista, huh? Bummer, too, I got all excited — couldn’t get the USB modem tethering to work either.
Just a thought to the Admin — throw in somewhere toward the top of the article that in all likelihood this won’t work for vista — it’s a pain to go through the whole set-up for this and then read the comments afterwards, realizing it was all for naught (though to be fair if I was smarter I would’ve read the comments first).

December 6th, 2010 at 2:58 pm
Hi,
I’m running XP Pro, SP3.. and on the Palm Pre itself: webOS 1.4.5…
installed the Palm SDK… ANYHOW..
I don’t get the “root@castle”… in the command prompt, I’m getting
” root@palm-webos-device:/# ” instead! Where did I f-up?? ALSO..
wget: bad address ‘mytether.net’
I put that address in my browser and it works.. so what gives??

hey.
so, i found a way more simple way.
once you put your device into dev mode, if you already have the webOS quick install program on your computer, click the tools tab, and then linux command line. and then… voila!!

March 2nd, 2011 at 8:52 am
me too. did you ever get an answer?
April 13th, 2011 at 9:28 am
When running the install command “wget…” I get a message saying “** (process:2887): CRITICAL **: WARNING: you must always call luna-send with “-i” or “-n”. Exiting with failure return code.”
And then “installation finished”.
The application icon shows in the palm pre but it only gives a blank page when running it.
If I try to re-install I get a message saying ” We have TetherServuce already! ”
Any idea of how to un-install and avoid the initial message?
Thanks

My Tether 2.1.1 just all of a sudden stopped working on my Palm Pre. What do I do please?
September 3rd, 2011 at 12:13 pm
I followed all the instructions and got the My tether on my Palm pre. But I am trying to use a Acer Iconia Tab A100 to go on the internet via my Palm Pre, which is on the Bell network. So why is AONET the network listed? Is it possible to do this on the Bell network? Or does it matter? Either way my Tab cannot “see” the Hotspot created by my phone. Any suggestions?
